There’s a host of restaurants and cafés in the airport. My favorite spot is Qataf Café, named for the national Qatari flower. Here you can enjoy a welcoming ambiance with oversized chairs and beautiful Moroccan lamps.

The menu offers a selection of mezze-style platters, Moroccan tajines, and Arabic sweets and coffee. For a more international flavor, try the Asian Yum Cha or fresh caviar at Caviar House & Prunier.

If you’re in the airport for a few hours, find a quiet lounge area to relax. The airport offers “quiet rooms,” tranquil spaces with soft lighting and designated male and female sections. Catch up on a few hours’ sleep or simply rest your eyes—your body will thank you later.

If you want a little more privacy, you can book a few hours at The Airport Hotel, a local four-star hotel located in the passenger terminal. Stays can be as short as five hours.

Choose from basic superior rooms to the all-luxury presidential suite.

You can order room service or hit the gym for a quick workout. Recharging in your own private space can be a lifesaver during those long-haul journeys!

The Vitality Wellbeing & Fitness Centre is made for layover travelers. The centre’s experts offer aromatherapy, revitalizing massages, cleansing facials, and general ways to revive and rejuvenate the worn-out traveler.

Book a treatment and get free access to the swimming pool, squash court, hydrotherapy tub, and shower room. They also have a day rate (around $35) that grants you access to the center.

The best part? It is located on the fourth floor of The Airport Hotel and is open 24 hours a day—so you don’t have to go far to get rid of your jet lag!

Complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport, so you can plug in and get some work done or watch a movie while you wait. If you don’t have your laptop with you, you can always head to the free internet kiosks, which can be found all over the airport.

      Hey Kiersten,
      Awesome post! I am looking at going to Bali and Qatar Airlines is the best overall pricing. I know you didn’t leave the airport so maybe this wont apply, but do you think it’s an unsafe area to travel to? The state departments website makes it sound unsafe, but I don’t know if they are just being overly cautious. Also Qatar has a layover program where they will put you up in a hotel if your flight is laid over for more than 8 hours. They give you a voucher for the hotel, food, transport and they help you get a Visa. It all sounds good but this would be my first solo trip so I’m a little nervous haha

        Hi Christina! Do you plan on leaving the airport? I would highly recommend flying with Qatar though Doha, especially if its the cheapest 🙂

        For the layover, the hotel is usually in the airport or attached so you don’t exit that actual airport area and would be fine. Congrats on the first solo trip! So exciting! xx

        Hi Christina! hope you got to enjoy your trip. were you able to get the vocuher easy ? i inquired over the phone and was told because I choose a 24 hr layover i would be on my own to pay for hotel .. mmmm? i book airline today and my date is not till 16 days from now

      I didn’t know about this”layover program”but do know that they do give a free tour of Doha which includes food if you are laid over in daylight hours,Christina.

    We spent a week in Diani Beach (just an hour flight from Nairobi) staying at @almahali.villas, and it ended up being one of those trips I’ll always remember. This was a mommy + me getaway, and I genuinely didn’t expect it to be this kid-friendly—so easy, so relaxed, and just fun.

    We had a private villa with a chef (game changer), got around by tuk tuk, and spent our days between the beach and some of the cutest beachfront restaurants—some even have playgrounds and kids programs on weekends (@galu_ecolodge_madafoos was a favorite).

    The little moments made it: fresh coconuts from beach vendors, a dhow boat ride that led us to dolphins, Maasai warriors hand-beading the boys’ friendship bracelets, the warmest ocean I’ve ever felt, and the craziest vervet monkeys you’ll ever meet.

    And the best part—getting to experience it all with my friend @tailsofamermaid, who lives in Nairobi and knows all of the best parts of Diani. She showed us all her favorite spots, and it made the trip feel so local and special!

    Meeting rescued baby elephants at @sheldricktrust has been on my bucket list for years… and it exceeded every expectation! 🐘

    We booked a private visit, which is $1,500 for a group of up to 10 people (2026 pricing), and fully donation-based — directly supporting the rescue and rehabilitation of orphaned elephants.

    There are only two private slots per day, so this is something you need to book well in advance.

    It’s absolutely a splurge, but for such an intimate, once-in-a-lifetime experience (and knowing it supports conservation) felt incredibly worth it!

    If that’s not in budget, they also offer daily public visiting hours (around $20 per person), which are still really special.

    NOTE: You’ll also need to pay the Nairobi National Park entrance fee for any visit.

    It pairs perfectly with a safari drive in the park, since you’re already there. It’s such an easy and meaningful add-on to any Nairobi itinerary.

    This is one of the most special (and ethical) wildlife experiences you can have in Kenya 🤍

    The Okavango Delta is one of those places that truly lives up to the hype… and then somehow exceeds it. 🦒🇧🇼

    A lush, water-filled oasis in the middle of the Kalahari, where the seasons quite literally shape the entire experience.

    Floodwaters arrive months after the rains fall in Angola, transforming the landscape into a maze of channels, islands, and wildlife-rich plains.

    We stayed at @aksanctuary Sanctuary Chief’s Camp on Chief’s Island — known as the predator capital of Botswana. Because it’s one of the only areas of permanent dry land, animals naturally gather here… which means some of the most incredible game viewing you can experience.

    What makes this place so special is the contrast. Early mornings tracking predators on game drives, and afternoons drifting through quiet waterways in a mokoro, surrounded by birds, reeds, and the kind of stillness you rarely find anymore.

    And the timing completely changes the experience.
    ✨ Dry season (May–October): peak flood levels + unbelievable wildlife concentrations
    🌿 Green season (November–April): lush landscapes, baby animals, fewer crowds

    No matter when you go, it’s one of the most unique safari destinations in the world, and one that feels wild, untouched, and unforgettable.
